Description

Mujadara is a comforting and savory Lebanese dish made with lentils, basmati rice, and caramelized onions.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup green lentils
  • 1 cup basmati rice
  • 2 medium onions
  • 4 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • Salt to taste
  • Black pepper to taste
  • 4 cups water

Instructions

  1. Rinse lentils under cold water, then combine with 4 cups of water in a pot, bring to a boil, and simmer for about 20 minutes until tender. Drain and set aside.
  2. In another pot, boil salted water and add basmati rice. Cook according to package instructions, usually 10 to 15 minutes. Drain if needed and set aside.
  3. While lentils and rice are cooking, slice onions. Heat olive oil over medium heat in a skillet, add onions, and cook, stirring occasionally, until golden and caramelized, about 15 to 20 minutes.
  4. In a large bowl, combine cooked lentils and rice. Add cumin, salt, and pepper to taste, then gently mix. Serve topped with crispy caramelized onions.

Notes

For a spicier flavor, feel free to add paprika or cinnamon to the dish.
